NEW SOUNDS TO SILENT FILMS

Salon Unmuted 07 – New Sounds to Silent Films -
Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam
D 1920, 85 Min., R.: Paul Wegener
Musici: VHSUHF (Mike Ottink - gitaar, electronics etc. / Brian Mckenna - electronics, sampler etc. / Seamus Cater - harmonica, concertina etc.)

LARS AMHOFF 'NEO GRAMOPHONE'

Neo Gramophone is concept by Lars Amhoff, it is an reincarnation of a classic gramophone. It can play music streamed from your iTunes, a subsurface touchscreen menu let you control the music player. I’m currious if it will get past this concept phase, but it’s a nice object anyway.

* The work of South African artist James Beckett (1977) stems from research-based activity, looking quite naturally backwards. The evolution in specific areas of the industrial revolution have played muse; such as the foundation of synthetic colour manufacture and its relationship to BASF, and the cultural implications of vacuum tubes for the Dutch firm Philips. His works often follow nonsensical lines of exploration along such paths, resulting in historical interventions, in the form of sculpture, sound and print. Included in this monograph are details of Beckett’s own registered tartan, a Scottish fabric whose pattern is a tabulation of the first stomach digestive experiments.

About my work: THE MEMOSEUM
Dis- remembering...
In 100 years’ time, what is it about an iron that we’ll find
most interesting? Is it the material it is made from? Its shape?
Its use? Time shifts the way in which we perceive things,
assigning changing significance to them and events.
In his compilation of drawings and image material,
Nikolaus Gansterer refers to hidden or forgotten moments of
meaning relating to selected collection objects. Each page of
his Memoseum represents a new narrative that opens up a
parallel space of possibility for the way in which things are
interpreted. Gansterer adopts different approaches, from the
historical to the history of ideas, from the formal or functional
to the associative, or the history of the institutions themselves.
In his synopsis the image constellations create a kaleidoscope
of meanings, symbolic of the course of time.

A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

Kato Hideki (USA/Japan) and Ursula Scherrer (USA/Switzerland)
a sound and video performance/installation
Transforming the space into a labyrinth of sounds and images, Kato (acoustic and electric instruments) and Scherrer (on analog video mixer) use text as a key structure to follow (or not to follow), in order to create a constant dialog between them, the audience and the environment.

LUMOKINESE
LUMOKINESE by Mike Rijnierse and Willem Marijsis is one of the winning projects of the BNG WORKSPACE PROJECT PRIZE 2008. The interactive installation gives an insight of how the commonly existing diversity of colours around us arises.
By the use of lumodynamic effects (moving light) with independent light sources (red, green and blue) and the use of kinetic objects (driven by electro motors) fascinating, moving, overlapping shadows arise. The positioning of the objects in relation to the light produces dynamic shadows. The space is transformed to an animation machine or wonder lamp. One can imagine the impact as if walking around in a movie projector. LUMOKINESE is a manipulated space in which the visitor and his shadows go on a journey of which they themselves are an integral part.
